wherethetruck.at started early in 2012 as a very basic website with a map that we (Xavier & Tom) manually updated with the locations of Melbourne food trucks we loved, mostly because we wanted such a thing to exist. There was no plan, except for wanting something live before the Food & Wine Festival (and that was a plan we made approximately 48 hours prior to the Festival beginning). We both work full time, and it quickly proved challenging to keep up (and a little beyond our skill sets to build the service we wanted wherethetruck.at to be). Somehow, we convinced Jack, an awesome combination of back-end and front-end developer to come on board with the promise of nothing but a share in a business that had no plans to actually make money. Fast forward a little over a year, and the service has grown enormously. We now have 79 truck profiles on the website all around Australia (and one in France). We’re just shy of 200,000 visits and have served up more than 500,000 page views. Our app (funded by you!) has been downloaded for free more than 4,500 times, and the launch party (pictured above) was just amazing. We’re genuinely astonished to see our Facebook and Twitter follower counts increase every day to the 4,400 and 3,300 of you on there, respectively. We have manually updated the website and our followers twice a day (almost) every day for the past 450-or-so days. Weekends, public holidays, even on occasion through a hungover haze when the only thing keeping us going was knowing that we might indirectly help someone else’s hangover by showing them where to get a burger for lunch. We must be doing something right – we’ve even seen a surprisingly similarly named service launch in the US recently: wherethetrucks.at. Spot the difference? A few months back, we added something pretty awesome to the site (thanks to Jack’s hard work): trucks have the ability to login and manage their wherethetruck.at profile and locations themselves. We’ve made it a pretty simple process thanks to a bunch of awesome trucks who have been beta testing it for us. We’ve come a long way since that very first iteration of the site, and so have our plans. We’ve got great things in store for wherethetruck and need to dedicate time to making these improvements to ensure the continuation of the site. That means opening up the system to all trucks to manage their account themselves, and stepping back from the daily updates. We anticipate that the takeover may take some time, and there may be locations missed in the interim. We understand that even though our system is awesome, food truck operators are hard pressed for time and adding something new to their workflow can be difficult at first. The bulk of the trucks have been incredibly supportive of us, and are doing an amazing job of keeping the locations on wherethetruck.at up to date for our brilliant community of users. If you see problems with your favourite truck’s location, let us know – we can usually fix them pretty quickly. If your favourite truck stops appearing on wherethetruck.at, let them know you miss them being here. And if your favourite truck continues appearing here as it’s always been, high five them for us. We love those guys. Hopefully we’ll see you truckside some time soon.

The post We’ve come a long way, baby. appeared first on Where The Truck At.

Well, it’s been a bit of a whirlwind over the past few weeks! We’ve launched the first iteration of our iPhone app – you can grab it on the App Store now! We had a massive party at Temple Brewery & Brasserie to celebrate – you can check out some photos on Facebook! And while we were recovering from all of that, we thought we might as well launch a new version of the website (which you’ve probably noticed already, seeing as you’re using it right now). The new site should be a fair bit nicer to use on mobiles, and will hopefully appease all the Android users out there until our Android app is ready – and we’ll have more news as soon as we can on that one. Hopefully you’re loving the app or the new website. We love getting your feedback, so get in touch if you’ve got feature requests or have found a bug that we need to fix up.

Well, it’s been a while between drinks on the blog. Since the last update, thanks to your amazing contributions, we raised about $11k for our app. Once all the transaction fees and things were taken out, we ended up pretty much smack bang on $10,000. We really can’t believe it! But even our Pozible campaign finished a while ago. So what have we been up to? This! (Oh, and getting things moving on all your awesome rewards.) Here is your first sneak peek at the Where The Truck App! It’s not quite finished, but we’re getting close. We’ve been beta testing it for a little while, and we’re about to open that up to our Platinum Sponsors too (you’ll get an email when we’ve sorted it all out, guys). You didn’t think we’d give too much away, did you? We’re hoping for a launch (and launch party) pretty soon, but there are no firm dates just yet. We promise you’ll be the first to know! In the meantime, keep on truckin’!

The post Where The Truck App is coming… appeared first on Where The Truck At.
